WHERE

This is a oblique view of a 3-D image of the Aral Sea in the late 1980's.

This image was created using ER Mapper. In the 3-D window of ER Mapper you can rotate 3 dimensional images on all three axes. This is the same image as the previous one, just rotated.
The original image of the Aral Sea is a mosaic of aerial photographs taken in the late 1980's. This image was scanned at the UCSD Library at 300 dpi and imported into ER Mapper. It was georeferenced using the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) of the Aral Sea region found in Digital Chart of the World (which was also imported into ER Mapper.) The georeferenced mosaic was then laid over the DEM, creating a 3-D algorithm, and viewed on the Indigo 2 SGI, "Mufasa" at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The screen image was captured and you are viewing a low resolution version of that.
