Many are forecasting the ecological collapse of the Salton Sea, California's largest inland sea. There are a number of theories/plans to save the Salton Sea but they are all expensive and would require cooperation from Mexico.

This is shuttle image STS068-0257-0073. You can clearly see the empty playa lake, Laguna Salida, at the bottom left. One plan to decrease the salinity of the Salton Sea is to pump highly concentrated brine from the Salton Sea into Laguna Salada and let it evaporate there.
