There are also unknown potential dangers in the area. The Salton Sea Test Base (SSTB) was a military bombing site that is currently being cleaned up by the Army Corp. of Engineers. The projects include cleaning up hazardous, toxic, and radiological waste, building demolition, and debris removal. In the public realm it is not well documented exactly what occurred on the base and exactly what is left there to clean up.
SSTB is located in Imperial County about ten miles south of Salton City. It occupies approximately 7,945 acres of land and 13,642 acres of water in the southwest portion of Salton Sea. SSTB was established in 1942 as an operational base for seaplanes. The remoteness of the area was ideal for training and other operations. Weapons research, development, testing, and evaluation activities occurred there.
