DIRECTIONS

The region of greatest interest is the "South Coast" region. Select it. The original image also includes sections of the "Mojave" and "Sonoran" Regions. If you like, you may also select those from the menu. From the bottom of the page, choose all three options, "TM Satellite Image," "Vegetation Map," and "Digital Elevation Model." When finished, push the "Submit Query" button. If a privacy window appears, choose the "Don't show again" or "OK" button. The query results will be displayed. Examine the images. Does there appear to be any linear features observable in the data? Scroll down to see all of the images.

A. South Coast Region

1. Can you identify any linear features that appear to match the fault systems we identified earlier?

2. Examine the Digital Elevation Model closely. Do you see any well defined linear features? This represents rapid changes in altitude.

B. Sonoran Region

1. The Salton Sea is an easily recognized image in the TM Satellite Image for the Sonoran Region. Can you identify a portion of the San Andreas Fault system?

C. Mojave Region

1. Look at the Digital Elevation Model for the Mojave Region. No, that's not a lake, that's Death Valley in the Northern corner of the image. Death Valley appears as a lapse in data because this is an altitude map, and that portion is below sea level (thus it has negative altitude)!
