The Aral Sea was once an oasis in the middle of an expansive desert. Now it has become part of that desert. This image shows how the shore of the Aral Sea is being invaded by the sand dunes of the Kyzyl Kum Desert. The dunes also contain a great deal of the salt formed by the evaporation of the Aral Sea. The desert is encroaching upon the agricultural regions to the South of the Aral Sea. |
