For the present, the Aral Sea continues to shrink, and it may soon be lifeless. Scientists believe that the Aral Sea will be completely dried up in the first decades of the 21st century. Future prospects are uncertain. The Aral Sea could be stabilized with improvements in the efficiency of irrigation, but would remain unable to support most organisms.
