ARAL SEA

Because of dropping water levels, the Kokaral Peninsula has expanded eastward and connected with the delta of the Syr Darya (Darya is Persian for river) , cutting of the northernmost portion of the Aral Sea. This smaller, more northern portion is now refrerred to as the Little Aral. There is no river entering the Little Aral Sea, and eventually it will be reduced to a series of smaller lakes.

In this image you can see what was once the thriving fishing port of Aralsk (northeast corner.) It is now nearly 100 kilometers from water. The Syr Darya once carried a large volume of water. It is now just a trickle.
