Sarykamysh, the small lake to the south of the Aral Sea, is increasing in size.
It is presently less than one-tenth
the size of the Aral Sea, but is growing due to water being diverted
from the Amu Darya River. This diversion is due to damming practices in the
agricultural region south of the Aral Sea. Water that ought to go into the Aral
gets backed up behind dams and instead flows into Sarykamysh.
The Caspian Sea is also increasing in size.
