At left is a pop-up model showing a cross-section of an erupting volcano.
One side of the model shows what the interior of a volcano looks like, while the
other side shows the exterior of the volcano. To the right
is an image of the eruptive ash cloud from the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo
in the Philipines.
To the left is a demonstration of a volcanic eruption. The students
knew this must be a Hawaiin-type eruption because it was safe for them to
be close-by. The middle image was photographed from the space shuttle.
It is an erupting volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the northwestern
Pacific Ocean. It is one of many volcanoes that comprise the Pacific Rim of Fire. At right is a series of images taken at the onset of
Mt. St. Helen's major eruption in May 1980.
