St. Louis, MO The Missouri River joins the Mississippi outside St. Louis. Periodic floods give new soil to farm land but can devastate farmers and city dwellers alike. Founded as a French fur-trading post, the city was once transferred to Spain, then back to France again, and finally to the United States after the 1803 Louisiana Purchase.
