Guiding Principles to Teaching and Learning with Geographical
Visualizations
Classroom
teachers were our collaborators as we studied how to support student
learning with geographic visualizations. Together we found that
students need practice and explicit support as they use these
resources in their learning. Student learning with visualizations
mirrors current best practices for effective science teaching
and learning.
- Start
with what students know; build upon their curiosity and intuition
-
Provide opportunities for students
to construct ideas individually and collaboratively
-
Allow students time to explore and become oriented to both the
form and content of the visualizations
-
Design visualization-rich learning activities with inquiry and
investigation in mind
-
Provide resources for students to
connect the content of visualizations to alternative representations,
and develop skills to enable image analysis
