Roger M. Downs is a Professor of Geography and Head of the Department of Geography at the Pennsylvania State University. His Research and Teaching Interests are in Behavioral Geography, Environmental Cognition, and Geographic Education. Dr. Downs is currently involved in these other Projects: EarthKAM, Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle School Students NASA project that allows students to take photographs of Earth's surface from a camera aboard the Space Shuttle and to conduct research projects using images from space. See the January 1999 issue of Technology Source for an excellent descriptive article on EarthKAM; U.S. Committee on Geography, The U.S National Committee for the International Geographical Union (USNC/IGU) promotes the advancement of geography in the United States and throughout the world; it also facilitates participation of U.S. geographers in the activities of the International Geographical Union (IGU) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU); Geographic Education National Implementation Project (GENIP) A consortium of geographical associations committed to improving geographic education through the implementation of the National Geography Standards, the Fundamental Geography Themes, and the Skills of Inquiry; National Geography Bee, National Geographic Society competition designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.
